The workshop on Algorithmic Learning Theory, ALT'91, preceded by the previous workshop ALT'90, was held at CSK Information Education Center in Tokyo, October 23 - 25, 1991. The workshop was sponsored by the Japanese Society for Artificial Intelligence. This volume contains the 25 papers including 3 invited papers which were presented at the workshop.
The contributions in these proceedings were selected from 28 papers, submitted in response to the call for papers, at the final selection meeting of the program committee held in Tokyo on June 24, 1991. In addition to the selcted papers the proceedings include three invited papers: ``The logic of molecular geneticists for the understanding of genetic information'' (by Y. Sakai), ``Learning simple Boolean concepts'' (by N. Littlestone) and ``Learning in multi-agent environments'' (by P. Brazdil).
The editors are deeply grateful to all the program committee members and referees who took part in the evaluation and the selection of submitted papers. In particular, we wish to thank H. Motoda, Y. Sakakibara and T. Shinohara for their excellent work. The program committee thanks all three invited lecturers for having accepted our invitation. Furthermore, many thanks go to all those who have submitted papers for consideration.
We thank all those who made this workshop possible, especially J. Arima, T. Hisano and T. Yokomori. We also wish to express our gratitude to CSK for the assistant and support with local arrangements. Finally, the excellent cooperation with Ohmsha Limited in the publication of the present volume is highly appreciated.
